Tissue Augmentation (with Dermal Fillers)

Tissue augmentation is the injection of filler substances into the skin, in order to improve the appearance of wrinkles and lines. Although tissue augmentation has been attempted for many decades, it is only in recent times that safe treatments have been developed.
The type of dermal filler used varies according to the depth of a patient's wrinkles.

The commonly used dermal fillers at our Clinic are:

Collagen. The two main types of collagen we use are ZydermTM 1 and 2 which are suitable for very fine to medium lines of the face. Approximately 2% of people are allergic to collagen and so two test patches are required (this is where a small amount of collagen is injected just under the skin, usually on a forearm). Although test patches are generally not required for other dermal filler products, collagen still has a role in cosmetic dermatology, particularly for the treatment of fine lines, or in patients in whom other dermal fillers are not suitable.

Restylane or Hylaform. RestylaneTM and another product called HylaformTM are newer products, used primarily to treat deeper lines and grooves. They are particularly useful for enhancing the lip and deeper lines and grooves around the face and nose.

Permanent Fillers. In 2003 our Clinic began using permanent fillers. This is a new generation of fillers, which have been used on many thousands of people, with no serious side effects. Their injection requires considerable expertise. Dr Bellaney himself performs treatment with these types of fillers. Studies show that these newer substances (eg. AquamidTM), persist in the skin for up to 5 years in most people.

Treatment with dermal fillers, particularly the newer types, may lead to some redness, swelling or tenderness in the treated areas during the first 24-48 hours. Generally, most people can return to work shortly after treatment
